PMGKAY: Almost 20 lakh tonnes of free rice, wheat distributed to beneficiaries
The Center has distributed around 20 lakh tonnes (lt) of food grains, since December 2021 to the beneficiaries of the fifth phase (December 2021-March 2022) of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY).
For the fifth phase, the Food Ministry had allocated a total of 163 liters of rice and wheat to all states and union territories for distribution under the program.
“With distribution having recently started for the second month, reports available from the States / UT show that approximately 19.76 liters of food grains have been distributed so far,” the ministry said in an official statement Wednesday. Performance in the current phase is also expected to be at the same high level as in previous phases, the ministry said, adding that it continuously monitors the collection and distribution of food grains on a daily basis.
Ensuring food security
After the lockdown was announced in March 2020, the Center launched the PMGKAY program to provide additional amounts of food grains to more than 80 crore of beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) as they are entitled to. under the law. These beneficiaries are offered 5 kg of wheat or rice per person per month to ensure food security during the Covid pandemic.
While the scheme was scheduled for April-November 2020, the government allowed benefits to run for 11 months from May in the current fiscal year. During phases 1-5, around 759 liters of food grains worth 2.6 lakh crore were allocated, the statement said. Of this total, approximately 580 liters were distributed.
Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim were ranked among the best performing states in phase 1-2 of the program while Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Mizoram, Delhi and West Bengal in phase 3- 4.
