UP Covid death: phantom beneficiaries compensated?
Till March 31, more than 41,000 people in 75 districts of UP received compensation of Rs 50,000 each. From Lucknow to Lakhimpur and from Gorakhpur to Ghaziabad, the number of beneficiaries is about double the death toll previously given by babus in each Tehsil.
In the capital Lucknow, the administration admits only 2386 deaths due to corona infection. But the disaster management department has already released aid of Rs. 50,000 each to 4,789 families. Currently, over 600 applications received in the new fiscal year are pending.
Similarly, in Gorakhpur, the administration only accepts 858 corona deaths. Until March 31, a total of 1,838 families have received compensation. This is the case when in many districts the documents relating to the deaths are missing. Death figures in Kanpur and adjoining districts have yet to be cleared due to lack of death audits. In many places, several applications from affected families are pending due to missing documents.
In Prayagraj, the lawyer Rahul Khare wonders about the functioning of the administration. He said, “There is still a lot of truth to reveal. Two cremation figures were recorded in the police register on the same day in April last year at Phaphamau Ghat. For the first time, 131 people were cremated, and for the second time, 126 people were cremated. But surprisingly, as of the same date according to health department data, only 11 people had died.
